2001 NEWS ARCHIVE

OLD NEWS IS STILL GOOD NEWS, SO PICK YOUR YEAR: 200320022000199919981997

TEMPE MEN IN FEMME FATALES?! (12/26/2001): Hitting newsstands in time for the holidaze is the latest issue of popular Femme Fatales magazine (Jan. 2002 issue, Vol. 11 No. 1).

So, there must be a profile of some Tempe femme in there, right? Well, not exactly...the cover features the lovely ladies of WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE with the bold words "J.R. BOOKWALTER: King of Guerilla FEMME FATALESFilmmaking" emblazoned across the top!

This nearly all-Tempe issue features a 13-page profile on our very own J.R. Bookwalter written by Jason Paul Collum. The piece discusses Bookwalter's early years right up to the current WITCHOUSE 3 and includes a look at the many women who have contributed to the last 16+ years of mayhem.

Following that is 4-page profile of director Danny Draven entitled "A Bookwalter Protégé Comes Into His Own" as he talks about getting his first shot at age 22 with HORRORVISION and his current work on HELL ASYLUM.

But that's not all! Actress Brinke Stevens gives us a 5-page look at the inner workings of WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE with an exclusive production diary, and then writer Mike Watt wraps up with a 6-page look at actress Tina Krause (BLOODLETTING, WITCHOUSE 3).

So why are you sitting there reading this? Get out there and plunk down your $5.95 for your very own copy! (We hear that with a new distributor taking effect this issue, the circulation has more than doubled and FF will now be readily available everywhere — including airports, convenient marts and grocery stores...so there's no excuse NOT to buy a copy!)

GERMANY COMES BACK FOR MORE (12/26/2001): Earlier this year we told you about a PAL special edition DVD release of THE DEAD NEXT DOOR in Germany. Now we've just inked a new deal which will see the release of two Tempe faves on VHS & DVD in shiny new remastered editions there.

SKINNED ALIVE will make its debut in March, complete with a new transfer from the 16mm negative and a 5.1 remix dubbed in the German language! There will also be loads of extras, including a featurette with new interviews from writer/director Jon Killough, producer J.R. Bookwalter, actors Scott Spiegel, Susan Rothacker, Barbara Katz-Norrod, Mike Render and others. A U.S. mass-market version of the disc will bow in May from our friends at Retromedia/Ventura.

But the real excitement is that extensive remastering is now underway on J.R. Bookwalter's cult hit OZONE, which debuts in Germany in April and will follow in the U.S. this summer. This $3,500 wonder is being completely restored from the S-VHS-C camera masters and the computer FX are being retooled from the ground up. Of course, the sound mix is being rebuilt and remixed in 5.1 surround also! A featurette with interviews & behind-the-scenes footage plus a commentary track are planned, and the U.S. edition will also include the original stereo mix.

As always, we'll be importing a limited number of these German editions and we'll keep you up-to-date on the pending U.S. releases!

The official street date of WITCHOUSE 3 is January 22, 2002 courtesy of our friends at Retromedia Entertainment who are making the disc available nationwide at Best Buy, Musicland and other major retailers! The DVD has also been purchased by the Movie Gallery rental chain where it will debut just in time for Christmas.

Order your copy today at the Tempe Video online store for just $19.99 plus shipping. (The VHS version is also available online.) The first 100 copies are autographed by director J.R. Bookwalter and star Debbie Rochon! (DVD only)

TEMPE PASSES THE PRODUCTION TORCH (12/3/2001): On the heels of the recently-wrapped DEAD & ROTTING (see below) comes word that J.R. Bookwalter has decided not to produce further movies for Full Moon Pictures under his Tempe Entertainment banner -- a deal that began in the summer of 2000 with HORRORVISION. The deal produced 9 features in less than 2 years, including the current WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE which Bookwalter directed.

Bookwalter made the announcement that he is effectively "passing the torch" on to his HORRORVISION protegé, Danny Draven (who recently directed HELL ASYLUM as part of the Tempe/Full Moon deal). Draven's Darkwave Films will assume all production and post-production responsibilities for a new slate of Full Moon releases in 2002, beginning with the urban chiller CRYPTZ which will shoot in Los Angeles before year's end.

"It's a completely amicable split with Full Moon," Bookwalter chuckles. "So I'll squash any nasty rumors right now. I just sat down with Charlie Band and told him I wanted to get back to my own projects...my heart has never been in producing. Danny has learned so much since I met him in early 2000 and knew he was the perfect choice to continue what I had set up there."

Fans can follow the latest news on Draven and Darkwave Films online (and also get a sneak peek at HELL ASYLUM with a Quicktime trailer now online)! And stay tuned to this Bat-Channel for news of forthcoming Tempe productions...

WHAT HAPPENED TO "VENGEANCE OF THE DEAD" REDUX (12/3/2001): Also after many delays, there is finally word that the VENGEANCE OF THE DEAD special edition DVD will ship this week! Orders placed prior to December 7th will include a special gift...so get to the website and orders yours today for $19.99 plus shipping!

PRODUCTION NEWS (a.k.a. WHEN DO THESE PEOPLE SLEEP?) (12/3/2001): Last time we told you about an "untitled" new flick from HORRORVISION director Danny Draven...well, now it has a title and it's HELL ASYLUM. Shot in and around Los Angeles, the flick stars Debra Mayer, Tanya Dempsey, Stacey Scowley, Olimpia Fernandez and Sunny Lombardo as a group of models who face their fears for a new TV show called "Chill Challenge". Look for cameos by Joe Estevez, Brinke Stevens and others! A Tempe limited special edition DVD will bow in February with some cool new extras.

Production on DEAD & ROTTING recently wrapped in our old stomping grounds of Akron, Ohio. First-time director David Barton (who contributed FX to THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, OZONE and more mainstream efforts like NEMESIS and THE USUAL SUSPECTS) has crafted a slick little thriller in the tradition of PUMPKINHEAD. The film stars Stephen O'Mahoney, Tom Hoover (POLYMORPH), Debbie Rochon (WITCHOUSE 3), Jeff Dylan Graham and Barbara Katz-Norrod (THE SANDMAN). Look for a trailer online soon, and a Tempe limited special edition DVD will bow in March (a month before the Full Moon VHS hits stores).

"WITCHOUSE 3" HITS THE STREETS, DVD IS TEMPE EXCLUSIVE (10/14/2001): This Tuesday, October 16th is the street date for J.R. Bookwalter's WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE, the latest from Tempe and Full Moon Pictures. The letterboxed VHS version will be available at Hollywood Video and other fine retailers. WITCHOUSE 3 DVD coverThe special edition DVD will follow in early November.

The most exciting news is that the WITCH 3 DVD has become the first official Tempe-branded digital release! Full Moon is allowing us to produce, manufacture and exclusively distribute this special edition DVD in the U.S. — there are currently plans underway to ship the title wide in January, 2002 but you can pre-order yours now from our website at a discounted price.

Showing its commitment to the DVD format yet again, Tempe has loaded this dual-layer disc with a host of features, many of which fans haven't seen on our previous Full Moon Lunar Editions. In addition to a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix and 16:9-enhanced transfer (1.85 aspect ratio), there are THREE — count 'em, THREE! — running commentary tracks! The first features director J.R. Bookwalter and star Debbie Rochon; the second features cast members Tanya Dempsey, Paul Darrigo and Brinke Stevens; and the third features producer Tammi Sutton, director of photography Danny Draven and crewmember (and Tempe staple) Jeffrey W. "Spud" Scaduto.

Choosing to break from the mold of discs from the last year, Bookwalter and team have done away with the traditional "making of" featurette and in its place are a wide variety of home movies, cast interviews, filmographies, two still galleries, bloopers & outtakes and more. This disc even includes the rare first glimpse at Bookwalter's earliest short films (BURNING OF THE SALEM WITCHES, shot in 1979), complete with his wry commentary.

And before you think that could possibly be all, we've hidden a great little Easter egg somewhere on the disc! (If you can't find it, we'll give you instructions on the website in the near future.)

Screener copies will be sent to all media in our database as soon as they are available. To be added to our mailing list, please send your request to publicity@tempevideo.com.

Pre-order your copy today at the Tempe Video online store for just $19.99 plus shipping. (The VHS version is also available online.) The first 100 copies are autographed by director J.R. Bookwalter and star Debbie Rochon! (DVD only)

PRODUCTION NEWS (10/14/2001): KILLJOY 2: DELIVERANCE FROM EVIL is now completed and being prepped for a January 8th, 2002 release. Directed by Tammi Sutton, starring Charles Austin,KILLJOY 2 box Olimpia Fernandez and Debbie Rochon. Stay tuned to the site for more news as well as the official trailer!

We've shot a whole other feature since our last update! The as-yet-untitled zombie flick is the latest from HORRORVISION director Danny Draven, working from a script by line producer and Troma vet Trent Haaga (CITIZEN TOXIE, TERROR FIRMER). Shot in and around Los Angeles, the flick stars Debra Mayer, Tanya Dempsey, Stacey Scowley, Olimpia Fernandez and Sunny Lombardo as a group of models who face their fears for a new TV show called "Chill Challenge". Look for cameos by Joe Estevez, Brinke Stevens and many others! As soon as the official title is announced we'll have a teaser trailer online. All we can tell you is, this promises to be the goriest flick we've done since 1989's SKINNED ALIVE! Tempe has the exclusive DVD rights to the February release -- so while the Full Moon VHS edition will likely be cut for an MPAA R rating, the DVD will be the unrated director's special edition with a host of extras!

Finally, our next production rolls in Akron, Ohio on Oct. 30th! It's back to where it all started as DEAD & ROTTING marks the debut of makeup FX artist David Barton (THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, THE VAULT) and will feature a cast of past Tempe favorites like Barbara Katz-Norrod (THE SANDMAN), Tom Hoover (POLYMORPH) and James L. Edwards (BLOODLETTING), plus new faves like Debbie Rochon (WITCHOUSE 3) and Jeff Dylan Graham (CREMAINS)! Stay tuned for more on this March release which will also be a Tempe special edition DVD!

"VENGEANCE OF THE DEAD" BECOMES TEMPE DVD EXCLUSIVE (8/18/2001): In one of their stranger marketing moves, Full Moon Releasing's Cult Video division has struck a deal with Tempe Video to exclusively distribute the Lunar Edition DVD of their latest release, VENGEANCE OF THE DEAD!

VENGEANCE DVD SLEEVEVENGEANCE started life a few years ago under the title SLEEPWALKER, the brainchild of Wisconsin filmmakers Don Adams and Harry James Picardi (also known as Three A.M. Films). If all this sounds vaguely familiar, it's because SLEEPWALKER is the film that indirectly kicked off the Tempe/Full Moon association — its post-production paved the way for J.R. Bookwalter's work on SHRIEKER and CURSE OF THE PUPPET MASTER and the rest, as they say, is history. (See the WITCHOUSE: BLOOD COVEN DVD for more.)

In addition to Bookwalter's post supervision, VENGEANCE also features a music score from Matthew Jason Walsh, who has contributed work to our past films such as THE SANDMAN and POLYMORPH. You'll also recognize songs from Slim Cessna's Auto Club, who were featured prominently in Walsh's 1997 thriller BLOODLETTING. And if that's not enough, the film features ADR from longtime Tempe actress Ariauna Albright.

Adams and Picardi are also no strangers to Full Moon — hired by Bookwalter in 1998, they worked their way up the ranks, first as sound editors and later as the editors behind such films as ALIEN ARSENAL, WITCHOUSE and RETRO PUPPET MASTER. When word went out earlier this year that Full Moon would start acquiring outside features for distribution, their 16mm ghost story became the debut title.

There are actually two different DVD versions of VENGEANCE — the first was produced for Hollywood Video and includes a director's commentary with Don Adams, the showreel WARWOLF and a WARWOLF making of. WARWOLF stars genre favorite Amber Newman (VAMPS, TENDER FLESH) and Randy Rupp (BLOODLETTING, EVIL AMBITIONS), produced as a teaser to raise money for that project. This version is not for retail sale and can only be found at Hollywood outlets.

The full special edition version is identical on side A, but side B includes a host of additional extras:

• SHRECK short film (full version originally distributed by Tempe)
• The Making of SHRECK
• SHRECK audio commentary by Don Adams
• Graphic Nature music video "I Know"
• Three A.M. Films newscasts
• The Making of RED EYES (unreleased feature)

This Lunar Edition DVD is exclusively distributed by Tempe Video and will be available within the next 2 weeks! But you can pre-order your copy today at the Tempe Video online store for just $19.99 plus shipping.

WHAT HAPPENED TO "VENGEANCE OF THE DEAD"? (UPDATED 10/14/2001): We've had a lot of pre-orders for our last announced release, VENGEANCE OF THE DEAD. Until the title officially ships, all pre-orders will include some special bonus gifts as our way of saying "thanks" for your patience! So get to the website and orders yours today for $19.99 plus shipping!

CRYPTKEEPER DEBUTS TEMPE DVDS IN U.K.! (8/18/2001): Following on the heels of the earlier Canadian and German DVD releases of THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, we've now invaded the United Kingdom thanks to a licensing deal BLOODLETTING U.K. DVDwith new label CryptKeeper. They have just debuted special edition DVDs of DEAD and the cult favorite BLOODLETTING! Best of all, both films passed uncut with an 18 certificate, nothing short of a miracle in the case of the grisly BLOODLETTING!

THE DEAD NEXT DOOR features many of the same features as the Astro German disc, but the BLOODLETTING disc debuts an all-new making of which features insight from writer/director Matthew Jason Walsh, stars Ariauna Albright, James L. Edwards and Joseph A. Daw, director of photography David A. Wagner and others. We have also recently shot new interviews with supporting stars Sasha Graham, Scooter McCrae, Michael Gingold, Tina Krause, Michael L. Raso and Pete Jacelone which will be incorporated into a longer version for the forthcoming U.S. special edition!

Sadly, these are PAL format DVDs, but they are free of region coding and will play in many new personal computers with DVD-ROM drives such as the Apple G4, iMac, Powerbook and iBook models! Get your copies at the Tempe online store...where else?

"KILLJOY" SEQUEL ROLLS FROM TEMPE (8/18/2001): KILLJOY 2: DELIVERANCE FROM EVIL begins production in and around Los Angeles on August 27th with WITCHOUSE 3 co-producer Tammi Sutton taking the directorial reins from a script she penned with Douglas Snauffer (WITCHOUSE 2: BLOOD COVEN). While Tempe had no involvement in the original KILLJOY, this one promises to be rousing fun -- slated to co-star is Tempe fave Debbie Rochon and our old pal James Black, who directed the last Big City/Tempe production, THE VAULT. KILLJOY 2 is the first of a new three-picture deal between Tempe and Full Moon so stay tuned for more! There are a lot of exciting projects brewing behind the scenes as well! But more news on those as they develop...

"STITCHES" PREPS FOR RELEASE (1/19/2001): Following on the heels of our latest release, HORRORVISION, is the creepy thriller STITCHES. Shot in September, 2000, STITCHES marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Neal Marshall Stevens (13 GHOSTS remake), who was guided through the process by line producer Ariauna Albright and producers Chuck Williams and J.R. Bookwalter. STITCHES makes its home video debut on VHS February 27th, 2001 and you can pre-order a copy beginning February 1st. For more information — including the official trailer and other downloads — visit the official website!

"THE VAULT" OPENS FOR ACTOR-TURNED-DIRECTOR (1/19/2001): Tempe fans have long remembered actor James Black, who first appeared on the scene in 1992's ZOMBIE COP but went on to portray Eddie Boone in J.R. Bookwalter's OZONE. Black left Ohio for L.A. in 1993 and hasn't looked back since, first on the syndicated TV series THE BURNING ZONE and later on the big screen with roles in OUT OF SIGHT, SOLDIER, GODZILLA and UNIVERSAL SOLIDER: THE RETURN. But Black has not forgotten his salad days with Tempe—in fact, he returned to the fold last August to play the role of Bradbury in HORRORVISION at Bookwalter's request (a role that he and screenwriter Scott Phillips wrote with the actor in mind). And now, James Black has added the role of director to his resumé—and Tempe is there again!

After the successful production of HORRORVISION and STITCHES, Full Moon turned to Tempe for its next Big City Pictures release, THE VAULT. First, producers J.R. Bookwalter and Chuck Williams enlisted WITCHOUSE 2: BLOOD COVEN scribe Douglas Snauffer to rewrite the existing screenplay with input from executive producer Mel Johnson Jr. (TOTAL RECALL). Then, Bookwalter took James Black up on his request to direct. Johnson and Full Moon producer Charles Band were thrilled with the choice, having already worked with Black as an actor in RAGDOLL (where he assumed the name "Tarnell Poindexter" for his standout role of Little Mikey).

THE VAULT production took place in an abandoned school near the University district of Tucson, Arizona (an old stomping ground for co-producer Williams, and the site of the followup production, William Shatner's GROOM LAKE). The results will debut on VHS and Lunar Edition DVD in March, 2001 and is already catching buzz as the best Big City release to date! Check it out for yourself at the official website, now online!
